About Panelz

Our Story

We operate a holiday lighting and décor company. While installing lights along a roofline in 2022 we were asked if we would feel comfortable cleaning solar panels "while y'all are up there??" We agreed to come back and give it a try after we took care of all of our holiday décor clients and put in some time conducting research online.

Before we could say 'sure!' we had to determine if there was a requirement for licenses, permits, and certifications, contacting the original solar installation company or the solar manufacturer. Other questions popped up along the way - “do solar panels even need to be cleaned?”, “…if so – how often?”, “What are the proper procedures for cleaning these panels?”, “do we use a tool to clean, or just some old towels, a special chamois? "What about soap?”, “Are there any benefits to cleaning these panels beyond aesthetics?” The answers to these questions surprised us! There are no requirements for licensing, permitting, or certification.

The solar installation companies we contacted told us that they would like to keep our number on file because their clients do call to inquire about this service. That was a clue to us! Maybe we’re onto something here! We called solar panel manufacturers, we visited their websites, and we learned that panel cleaning is recommended on an “as needed basis” but “no more than once or twice per year” and that “it really depends on environmental factors that might cause debris to build up on the panels that does not slide off when it rains.” (vehicle exhaust, construction particulates, bird poo, etc.) We also obtained the do’s, don’ts and best practices for cleaning panels properly and safely.
